Fishing Report: February 3, 2018

Spread the love

Cold overnight, after midnight the temperature will rise through the day to a high of 27F on Saturday with SSW winds at 10-20mph.  A steady barometer through the morning before it begins to fall after lunchtime.  We do have a lake effect snow and winter weather advisories and warnings in effect until 4pm on Saturday.  The worst looks to be to the north but any shift in the winds and Oneida Lake could get pounded from this.  Sunday looks a bit warmer with more calm winds.  The snowstorm forecast for Sunday is holding at 3-5″ although some of the national services put it at 1-3″ so the moral of the story is don’t forget about the travel side of things.

The extended forecast for the area shows a cold pattern settling in that is expected to stay put for at least the next two and likely the next three weeks.  That forecast does include plenty of snow, with storms this weekend and into next week.  If that holds, we will easily be ice fishing on Oneida Lake well into March.

Fishing Report

We still have a major crack running along the north shore, if you are headed out that way use extreme caution.  That crack has hung up people each of the last two days.  A lot of conflicting information on that crack coming in so please bring a spud along and as more information comes in we will pass it on.  Other than that, travel is good on the lake with most of the snow beat down or blown off by the wind.  Wheelers and sleds moving across the lake, but with the amount of snow coming in things should shift to the sleds.

With the cold and wind Friday, reports are few and far between.  I’d go so far as to say Friday was the least amount of people I’ve seen along the north shore since the first days of the season.  Still 30 FOW north and south shores but mostly looker walleye and a grind to grab perch.  Out of the north and south shore, I’m starting to get the sense the south shore has a slightly better perch bite right now but neither shore is hot.  I did speak to a couple groups who moved in a bit closer to the north shore but came up empty with the walleye being short and skunked in the perch department.  Shorts and lookers from Lewis Point with people trying varying depths with so-so results.  Certainly hoping for a better day today.  Big Bay is producing in the panfish department.

Remember it is free snowmobile weekend today and tomorrow.  On that subject, next week is the Bash on the Beach sled races in Sylvan Beach.  Kinda cool to check out, but may put some wrinkles in terms of parking and access for those who like to go off from the beach.
