Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a day to honor those who fought in the war that officially ended more than 40 years ago. Sadly, this is the first time this has been celebrated officially on the anniversary of the last combat forces leaving Vietnam in 1973. This day is long overdue and I see little to no coverage on either CNN or Fox–disgusting.
Former President Barack Obama declared March 29 Vietnam Veterans Day in 2012. In 2017, President Donald Trump signed the “Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017” into law, making the date a commemoration of Vietnam veterans every year.
According to the Defense Department, nearly nine million Americans, approximately 7 million still living today, served during that period, and the commemoration makes no distinction between veterans who served in-county, in-theater, or were stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam years. All answered the call of duty and over 58,000 Americans gave their lives in Vietnam, with many more veterans continuing to suffer today from the war, and 1,600 soldiers remain unaccounted for to this day.
The Vietnam War was a divisive and difficult time for the United States and few veterans got the recognition for their service they needed to receive (and many treated poorly), which is why commemorating this holiday is so important. With many readers of this blog vets, we humbly respect the great sacrifices made protecting our country.
There are still a few venturing out, we are just begging you to use extreme caution if you choose to head out. The run-off coming into the lake from our spot here on the north shore is substantial and our position is that conditions are unsafe at this time. We are filming an episode of “The New Oneida Lake Show” tonight and Rob is frankly giddy from the Bassmaster Classic so expect plenty of energy! We will try to focus him on the upcoming walleye season 🙂
Bad Predictions for Baseball 2018
Today is also opening day for baseball. This blog has a history of poor predictions in the major sports so take this with a grain of salt…
