Roller Coaster

The ride continues as the temperature is on the rise once again.  Some worries about freezing rain midday and a high in the 50s tomorrow before the cold stuff comes in early during the day on Friday.  More traditional temperatures expected for the weekend and the start of next week.

People are getting out on the ice, but caution is in order.  Lots of cracks and heaves and some large holes have been created by the runoff.  Slick conditions out there with a little water on top of the ice, but machines are getting around without issues provided you stay mindful of the changing conditions.  Shorelines have held up pretty well, but stay awake around tributaries.  Getting reports of parking issues on a couple spots.  If you are unsure or a lot is full, try some common sense and find parking somewhere else.  I know of four spots with angry property owners who have been kind enough to provide access.  The young socialists would like you to pick up their trash too–sorry, I had to…

Certainly, a tougher bite as we continue into February, the perch schools are definitely not as common as even a week ago.  While people are still getting walleye and perch, the number of double limits has taken a serious nosedive.  We are getting more reports of activity in and around Messenger Shoal, and still some good action running from Chapman Park to Lewis Point walleyes on jigging raps with minnow heads, set up around 25 FOW and move around.  Increasing numbers of perch are being taken with jig heads and spikes.  Bottom line is you will have to work for it, much more of a grind now.
