Portions of the Canal System will open at 7 a.m. Friday, including the Erie Canal, from Locks E-2 in Waterford to E-8 in Scotia, and from Lock 28A in Lyons to Lock 35 in Lockport, along with the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. However, The Erie Canal from locks E-8 in Scotia to E-22 in Rome, and from Lock E-24 in Baldwinsville to Lock E-27 in Lyons, as well as the Oswego and Champlain canals, will have their openings postponed due to heavy rains and snow melt. Boaters can access the western end of Oneida Lake from Erie Canal Lock E-23 in Brewerton, which typically sees the highest volume of boats. A spokesman for the New York State Canal Corporation, notes that Oneida Lake is currently running about 6 to 8 inches above normal for this time of year. The boots on the ground tell us it is every bit of that and more with a lot of folks reporting submerged docks.
Only two dry days so far this May and today will not be one of them. Clear through the day with some breaks of sunshine during the day, but some scattered showers later in the day. Looking at a high in the low 60s with low winds, a cold front comes in overnight bringing in some more rain with scattered showers in the forecast for Friday. It may be a bumpy ride out there Friday with some wind expected.
Walleye Wednesday is on today with the launch at 5:30 at the south shore boat ramp. Still a good amount of debris and floating goodies and some very muddy water in and around the tributaries.
