I’m getting reports of 6″ to 10″ inches of ice on both the east (Sylvan Beach) and west side (Big Bay) of the lake. Bait shops have been packed so I’d stock up today as it may be a struggle for them to keep up with demand over the long holiday weekend. No reason to dwell on the forecast much, it is going to be cold today and stay cold. We are looking at some lake effect over the weekend but right now the ever reliable weatherman is saying 1-3″ for Oneida Lake and that is old hat around here. The usual travel issues coming in from the north with the lake effect, all other directions look reasonable. The lake should remain fairly clear of snow from this coming snow. Saw some odd things on the fake CNN news this morning: it’s warmer on Mars than in Minneapolis, Niagara Falls has frozen, and there was a mention of hell freezing over as well–something about politics 🙂 We can all agree it is cold.
Both Sylvan/Edgewater and Big Bay are an easy drag–no machines as of yesterday, north shore is still a bit of a challenge the first quarter mile or so especially the further you go east, after that it becomes reasonable. People are getting out off Aps and Jewel–did see a lone shanty off Taft and Bernhards Bay Friday. Godfrey and Lewis Point I’m told have a few question marks, Godfrey especially. I’ll be getting over there after daylight to see the story first hand and will Tweet out pics if I can get father technology to go with the program. As far as the greater south shore there are a lot of ridges and challenges that will cause issues when machine time rolls around–just keep that in your files.
Walleye and perch action off Sylvan in the 12-20 FOW range but keeper walleye seem have yet to join the party in large numbers. Voodoo jigs tipped with bait is a solid choice. Panfish in Big Bay steady, but certainly not on fire yesterday. Hopefully the crowds play nice there today. Barometer was flat last night but began to fall in the early am, just before 6am this morning we are at 30.06 and falling. Super Moon on January 1 should be cool.
With the numbers expected out there today, I should get some nice reports in. I know it has been cold but stay safe out there.
I’m getting pretty excited over here!
