A lot of misinformation is floating around on social media. We hope to clear up some of the confusion as we all sort out various responses to the virus.
Oneida Lake Is Open For Fishing
The following statement comes directly from the NY DEC’s website: “You can still go fishing under the Governor’s PAUSE Executive Order. However, in light of the COVID-19 outbreak, we ask that you please act safely when fishing. If you arrive at an angler parking area that is congested, consider finding another area that is less crowded. When you’re on the water, please make sure there is ample room between you and your fellow anglers. Don’t share a boat unless it is large enough so that all persons aboard can always remain at a minimum distance of six feet apart. Providing ample distance helps to reduce the spread of colds, flu and COVID-19 and also contributes to an overall better angling experience. Good Luck Fishing!”
Hotels, Accommodations, and Other Businesses Remain Open
The PAUSE Executive Order permits lodging facilities to remain open, again public health officials urge people to practice social distancing and common sense things like washing your hands. Gas stations, grocery stores, repair shops, and convenience stores also remain open.
Construction is underway and continuing in Cleveland for the fishing access site. Small businesses in the area are suffering but remain resilient and many note the stimulus package is “useless” for them. We realize it is tempting to make purchases online, but these are the stores that sponsor the local tournaments and provide all of us with so much valuable advice and information. Please consider supporting our Oneida Lake businesses when things return to normal.
We hope everyone stays healthy, it is difficult to make predictions with this virus but we remain optimistic for the walleye opener that is coming up soon. Please stay safe, we will continue to post updates on the virus and how it impacts fishing this year on Oneida Lake. Finally, in these times, let us not forget we are the greatest country in the world, we will get through this, we will be stronger.
