Much more activity on Oneida Lake today. Reports coming in from Williams Beach 2.5-4″ of ice, highly variable, tricky as you head out to deeper areas. A few folks have ventured out along the north shore and report 2-5″ of ice, the same thing highly variable and thins out. The north shore still has some issues near shore, further out there are still some pockets of open water, and as an old-timer remarked to me yesterday, “slowest damn refreeze I remember.” Getting some decent reports of perch being taken earlier in the morning. People are still getting to the ice from Big Bay but the bite is reported to be a bit slow.
Cold is in the forecast, below freezing all next week with some lows in the single digits. Before that, we will have to dodge some lake effect, it is snowing a bit mid-day here Friday, and depending on where the lake effect bands head, we could get up to six inches. As of right now, we should miss most of that, but the lake effect snow tends to do as it pleases. If you are planning on getting out this weekend, pack the spud and make sure you get here really early. Lots of pent up demand.
