Last night the precipitation came down in the form of graupel, but we only got maybe three inches of the stuff at the most. We are now looking at a trace to two inches of snow and we can put this storm in the rearview. With the exception of Wednesday, temperatures look seasonable through the week with another round of subzero air coming in for the weekend. Right now there are a lot of slushy spots and we don’t expect to see anyone ice skating on Oneida Lake like over the weekend, but this storm could have been much worse and a bit of rain on Wednesday followed by some nice cold nights will probably knock it down again.
Saturday afternoon saw the first few people accessing the ice and fishing the north shore–from Cleveland to Jewel and moving east right on the drop-off. Fishing was a bit slower Sunday and we have many reports of 5-7″ of nice black ice with some cracks and shove ice forming. As always, thicker ice reports coming in via FB, put things generally between 6-8″ along the south shore. We are also beginning to see more and more machines. Most of the favorite access points are now good with dozens of reports coming in, the exception being Godfrey Point where we have only a single report from anyone accessing from there–no surprise frankly. Looks like once you clear the shove ice in and around the launch things look pretty good though. Worth noting a few folks tried the area between Godfrey to Jewel both Saturday and Sunday with machines but turned back fairly quickly and just accessed Oneida Lake by foot, but that should change this week. We did get some good reports coming in along the north shore.
The perch bite seemed a bit stronger than the walleye bite from the various fishing reports that came in. Spoons and jigging minnows are the go to’s and most folks seem to be zeroing in on 25 FOW. The barometer is 28.97 and rising through the day today and into tomorrow.
Once again we have been asked to relay that the daily limit for walleye on Oneida Lake is still three at 15″ or longer. Also, for those accessing from Lewis Point, during the weekend you are gonna need to be there by 5 am at the latest. If you are later, have a backup plan cause parking fills up early.
