Mostly cloudy today, but it at least stays dry with a high in the mid-40s. The barometer is at 30.6 overnight, but dropping through the day today and tomorrow. It will get increasingly windy as the day progresses today. A high around 50 tomorrow (absurdly above normal as one weather forecaster described it) with some significant rain possible may mean we have reached peak ice and are starting the inevitable decline, though we have a very nice base we are working off. Saturday looks very windy, so take the proper steps. More warm air next week is in the forecast. Again we have a very nice base, we will be watching the shoreline, especially after Thursday. We have reports of a few cracks here and there, but nothing major for now. A couple of reports from the north shore indicated 12-13 inches of black ice with another 3-4 inches of white ice on top.
Still, we are getting some nice reports across the lake just before dark. Spoons and jigging raps (white glow and metallics) as per usual most reports keyed in around 25 FOW. We are expecting people may stay a bit closer to shore today on account of the wind–or avoid it altogether. A few reports mentioned paying attention to jigging cadence, needing to switch up the presentation to get the eyes to commit. While many are reporting they are not grabbing limits, they are grabbing enough for a meal.
Thanks for updating the conditions, going to try to get out on Friday. Our annual trek to Oneida. Last year we were blown off the lake, looks like that might be the case this weekend.
Where are you heading out from? I’ll try to get a decent report from where you are going from.
We are heading out from a private resuence just east of Anglers Bay. Talked to the owner yesterday and he advised that he has beem accessing the the lake by ATV without problems. We use a ATV with chains pulling a smitty sled. All help is appreciated!
There are about a half dozen guys out there right now, one ATV. Everybody looks like they are moving fine, standing water as expected but really not too bad. Chains gonna be a really good idea when this quick freeze comes. The wind is not as bad as forecasted and we haven’t gotten much rain, just a quick shower so far. Right next to Anglers’ Bay to the east a couple of houses down there is a point that sticks out. That always gets a tone of run-off and is one of the early risky spots, but there is not much reason to be over there. Looks like these guys are in a bit that are out there now, but the guys getting out of Anglers’ Bay have been going straight out into 30 FOW and been doing great now for weeks–you are fine to the east and west. We will keep an eye out for you and let you know if those groups are having any issues. Let me know if you need anything, we will have a few guys out in the same spot over the weekend. Hoping this wind stays down. I’ll let you now how they are doing.
