Writing today’s report early again as we are in the midst of a massive temperature drop, 30 degrees or so. I checked right at midnight and we were still in the 50s. At 1:30 am now we are down to 34F. Today’s high temperature is a bit misleading as it occurred at midnight. It is still raining pretty hard but that will convert back over to snow. We are looking at 1-3 inches of snow once it finally shifts over. Winds WNW at 10-20 mph with gusts. Tomorrow we are still expecting some serious wind. 29.25 on the barometer now but heading up through the day.
OK ice conditions… Where do we start? Tons of water sitting on top of the ice and rapidly expanding holes everywhere. You really have to watch for tributaries, cracks, and old holes. Lots of water reported over by Edgewater, and Godfrey Point has a pressure crack resembling a geyser. Jewel reports mention more of the same. You don’t have to go far to find six inches of water. We did see some wheelers moving pretty well around midday in the Anglers’ Bay area, but there’s plenty of water reported there as well. Guys are still drilling through 10-14″ and in spots more (mostly black ice), but we are starting to get some dangerous conditions, especially with more warmth and rain next week expect those holes to continue to cause problems. Reports today indicated several that doubled in size in a matter of hours. I can’t imagine anyone is out with a sled now, but plenty of wheelers. It is slick as hell out there. A huge heave developed off Lewis Point heading toward Wilson as well. There is another issue off Mill in Constantia, but we don’t have great details.
Fishing reports were a mixed bag, got slow reports out of Lewis Point over to 109, a bit of action from Jewel toward Godfrey 20-30 FOW. Some perch off Cleveland reported in more shallow water and that stayed true moving to the west toward Constantia. The last two or three days we have also heard of some nice gills and sunnies from Big Bay.
Extra caution is advised moving forward, we have another round of warm air mid-week next week with some heavy rain again Tuesday. Just peaked at the 14-day forecast and for what it’s worth (not much), we are looking at a shift to above-average temperatures.
We will update the report today as information comes in and will tweet out if we get reports of danger spots.
Update: We only have gotten one person on a wheeler report in yet, but he said going was good. Didn’t find much slush, we didn’t see anyone out off Sylvan Beach earlier. A few people are scattered off the north shore and some of them are regular contributors so hopefully, we have some more details for tomorrow’s report.
