Fishing Report: A Day of Rest

Spread the love

With a very busy fishing weekend on Oneida Lake now in the rearview mirror, Monday sees much less activity on the lake. I guess we all have to work…

Weather

A high of 36F today with winds from the NE at 5-10mph making for a comfortable day to fish on Oneida Lake.  The balance of the week to will remain below freezing with the exception of Thursday where we will reach 40F again.  After that, some cold air will move in to start the month of February and with it bring some snow cover back to Oneida Lake, which will help sleds to move around the lake again.

Fishing Report

Yesterday was a tough bite, I suppose we had that coming to us.  Mostly lookers on just about every presentation in the book, I only heard of a couple walleye limits Sunday and they really put some time in to get them.  Both walleye and perch seem to be a bit more active today as we actually have more reports of walleye limits today over Sunday.  Amazing with considerably fewer people out fishing Oneida Lake today.

We are also starting to get reports of bourbot being taken as they begin to move toward the shallow water to spawn.  Bourbot are actually great eating, try them fried, baked, or broiled and you won’t be disappointed.  Every year people seem to catch them and leave them on the ice, just remember this fish is no threat to the lake so please don’t just leave them on the ice.  Catch them with a basic walleye presentation, jigs tipped with fatheads or shiners.

Conditions on the ice remain very slick, but snow is on the way.  By next weekend, we expect sleds to be fully back in the equation.

Odds & Ends

We always hate to relay this information, but it seems we are getting to that time of year again.  Property owners are complaining about trash being left behind at various access spots along the lake.  Please remember to be respectful of the community.  Along those lines, I also spoke with a couple property owners who were not pleased with trucks and trailers parking on their property.  In one case, a property owner was blocked in completely for the entire day on Sunday and the guilty party left trash behind.  Please respect private property folks.  That particular property owner has informed me next time they are going to have the rig towed.  We urge you to know where you are parking and if you are unsure ask someone or go to one of the state lots–Cleveland, near apps and Godfrey Point have parking.  Vellas Northshore Market also allows parking if you want to head out from Cleveland.  Taft Bay has a lot of parking and parking is generally pretty easy to find off Sylvan Beach.  Just ask if you don’t know, most of the locals are actually more than willing to help.

Anglers’ Bay has an open cottage for this weekend if you are looking for a place to stay.
