Fishing Report: Another Warm One

Spread the love

As expected, it did not dip below freezing overnight.  We will get close to 50F today with SSW winds at 5-10 mph and light showers later in the day–barometer falling through the day.  It is going to stay above freezing until Friday afternoon.  Keep in mind we are expecting some serious wind on Friday.  The weekend looks solid from a weather perspective.  Peaking into next week there are highs in the 40s and 50s with a 60-degree day as well as plenty of rain.  The shores are going to take a hit over the next ten days, even with the nights below freezing.  No travel issues expected over the next few days as the roads are free of snow and ice.

Fishing Report

Reports have really slowed down in the last week with the declining numbers out there.  North shore, east shore, and Lewis Point walleye action have all cooled substantially and we are only getting reports of a slow bite and shorts with a few perch here and there.  Shakelton seems like it hasn’t produced consistent fish in forever.  If you managed a limit of walleye in the last couple of days our hats go off to you, we’ve only gotten a couple reports of limits during that time.  Also, we’ve only gotten a few double-digit perch reports over the same period.  Some good news, we are still getting some reports from Big Bay where there is steady panfish action.  Please keep an eye on the ice conditions as we move toward the end of the season.

We are taping the New Oneida Lake Show tonight, Tom from Voodoo was out on the lake yesterday and will be out again today–the pressure is on now!  We will post the show sometime Friday.

Algae Blooms

As many of you are aware, Oneida Lake suffers, as many New York lakes do, from toxic algae blooms.   As part of the state’s $65 million effort to control this problem, there will be four regional summits taking place over the next month in upstate New York with a panel of experts available to answer the public’s questions.  Admission and parking are free for all of these summits that run from 6-8pm.  The dates and locations are:

Tuesday, Feb. 27 at SUNY New Paltz Student Union Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor.

Tuesday, March 6 at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Gateway Center Building, Syracuse.

Tuesday, March 20 at the Best Western Ticonderoga.

Monday, March 26 at the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center, SUNY Monroe Community College, Rochester.

We do plan to attend and will report back what we find out.  Definitely worth checking out and kudos to the state for addressing this issue that drastically impacts the economic impact the state receives from tourism to our many lakes.
