Caution Advised This Last Weekend

Spread the love

We still have a few people out venturing onto Oneida Lake to do some late season ice fishing.  A couple of reports of some decent perch action off the beach and along the south shore and out by the buoys lines.  Every report mentioned deteriorating ice conditions.  Lots of open holes and cracks across the lake along with honeycombed ice that rapidly increased during the day yesterday.  Access from Big Bay is poor and the ice is becoming sketchy, also the access from the north shore stinks, with a lot of run-off making for dangerous conditions.  The ice we had this year was not built to last and we are seeing this play out.  Our regular contributors to this site have packed their winter gear up for the season and do not recommend going out.  Frankly, this brief stretch of cold hasn’t mattered at all.  It is going to be pretty interesting to see how quickly the shore opens up this year, we will post some pictures on our Instagram as the melt progresses.

The really warm air comes in on Sunday and runs through the majority of the week with some rain mixed in.  Today will be our last regular report of the ice season–to reiterate, ice conditions on Oneida Lake are deteriorating rapidly and this will accelerate over the next few days.  Not the best ice fishing season here on Oneida Lake this winter, but, as always, we all made the most of it.  We will post some updates between now and the opener, as we do expect some shore action prior to the season’s close as that becomes our only option.

That’s all folks.
